Building your own image gallery in Drupal 7

There are many gallery modules for Drupal 7 around, notably the media_gallery module.

I propose to present a comparison of several gallery modules, including their pros and cons, and give a detailed tutorial on how to build an custom image gallery. I'll start with creating a content type for the gallery content, and end with a fully styled responsive image gallery.

The following modules will be used:

field_collection - used in the content type for this gallery

field_collection-views - to expose the field_collection fields to views

epsacrop - to enable the editor to create custom thumbprints of the gallery images

lightbox2 - for displaying the image in a lightbox

views - for displaying the main gallery page, containing thumbprints - a brief recipe to show you what you need from views.

epsacrop - to enable the editor to create custom thumbprints of the gallery images

With very little css the gallery becomes responsive. Add customization to the lightbox to get a reliable image gallery that is easy to maintain by any editor.
