Put Your Content On the Map: Intro to Maps and Location Data for Drupal

Does your site deal with location data? Would you like your visitors to be able to visualize the data? Interact with it?

In this session we will take a quick look at the various Drupal map and location modules, then dive in and create a map-based application. Starting from the ground up – a basic Drupal 7 site – we will configure the modules we need, get our data in shape, and create and customize map views and displays.

To get the most out of this session, you should already be familiar with installing modules, creating content types, and creating views in Drupal 7. (Intermediate site building skills are recommended; mapping and location content is at the Beginner level.)

Bring a laptop and follow along if you’d like. A full list of modules is posted on the demo site. Or download the code, database, and files for the starting point or fully-baked version.

After this session, you will know how to:

  • Choose among available modules
  • Create and import location data
  • Create map views
  • Customize your maps with specialized markers and map tiles

An earlier version of this session was presented at BDUG. The BDUG session screencast is available on YouTube. See also the finished demo site showing the features we'll be building.

Final session slides are attached to this page. The BADCamp session screencast, with captions, is up on YouTube.
